Downtown “Streetscape” Initiative Promising for Cyclists, Pedestrians

Tonight at the Town Hall, there was a public information session, covering the conceptual plans for improving the streetscape in Needham Center. Leading the presentation was the Downtown Streetscapes Working Group and the plan’s designers.

The plans include a bike lane on the East end of Great Plain Ave, and sharrows in the downtown area to remind drivers to share the road.

The Downtown Streetscape Committee was formed in the winter of 2013 to provide guidance and make recommendations to the Needham Board of Selectmen concerning the Streetscape in Needham Center. In the Streetscape project, Needham Bikes was ably represented by Gary Levine.

The committee paid particular attention to the following:

  • Architectural elements
  • Bicycle accommodation
  • Composition and feel
  • Design approach
  • Handicap accessibility
  • Historic preservation
  • Holiday / special event accommodations
  • Landscaping
  • Lighting
  • Maintainability
  • Parking availability
  • Pedestrian accessibility
  • Pedestrian amenities
  • Signage
  • Snow removal
  • Street furniture
  • Traffic control
